The Necessity to Be Reborn
This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” – John 3:2-3
Nicodemus was a high ranking Pharisee, who strictly followed the Mosaic Law and Jewish traditions. Likely on an assignment from the Council, Nicodemus goes to Jesus at night to seek some answers. Nicodemus said to Jesus, “We know You are a teacher from God”. When Nicodemus says “We” it identified he was speaking on behalf of a group. By Nicodemus going under the cover of darkness, at night, identifies he did not want to be seen. The response Jesus gives is the only answer for someone seeking answers from God with an altered motive, as Nicodemus likely had at this time. It is also the first step necessary to have fellowship and constant communication with God.
Jesus said, “…unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”. Being born again has to deal with our inner most being, our spirit. Jesus explains that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Being born again requires a person to be saved. Being saved requires a person to believe, confess, be baptized and receive Holy Spirit. There are multiple scriptures which identify belief, confession, baptism and Holy Spirit in relation to being saved. Just a few references are below:
He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
– Mark 16:16
So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your
household.” Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And
he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all
his family were baptized. – Acts 16:31-33
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, – Romans 8:16 NKJV
The initial response from Jesus explains how without being saved a person cannot SEE the Kingdom of God. According to Matt. 6:33 from the Amplified bible we understand the Kingdom of God is God’s way of doing things. After Nicodemus replies, Jesus said, “…unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot ENTER the kingdom of God”. Understand, without being saved a person cannot see or enter God’s way of doing things. It would make no sense for Jesus, or us, to explain Kingdom things to a mindset of a person who needs to first be saved.
This encounter must have had an affect Nicodemus. We see later in John 7, Nicodemus is questioning the quick judgment of Jesus by his Pharisee peers. In John 19, we see Nicodemus at the burial of Jesus, openly and not in secret, with myrrh and aloes. Nicodemus had an encounter with Jesus which changed his life. The encounter lead him to salvation.
Beloved, the first step is salvation. Encourage people, through testimony of Jesus Christ and your lifestyle of Faith, to be reborn.
